EP1: Get Comfortable with Dana Lowe
For episode 1 of Get Comfortable (with Maggie Smith), I was joined by Dana Lowe from the Moonbeam Studio in San Angelo, TX. I’ve known Dana for years as a client in her studio for beauty services and Reiki services, and as a friend. Dana was an excellent guest to discuss self-care, especially as it applies to entrepreneurs and women and women entrepreneurs. Up top, Dana shared her holistic self-care philosophy with the audience. We also addressed the familiar challenge of the importance of saying, “No,” especially as a business owner.
We shone a light on the need for individuals to truly know who they are and what they need to maximize the benefits of their own self-care practices. An intervention I use in sessions is prompting folks to make a menu of activities they enjoy. When you have free time, you can just choose something from the menu. Dana added a twist: writing the activities on individual slips of paper, putting the slips of paper into a bowl (or whatever), and randomly drawing an activity.
Through our conversation, Dana and I emphasized how neglecting self-care can lead us to being more reactive and less compassionate with ourselves and those around us. When you take good care of yourself, you’re able to show up as your best self for your loved ones, your neighbors, yourself, and the world. We encourage you to keep in mind that those blank spaces in your schedule don’t necessarily indicate time that is available to or for others. That time belongs to you, and you owe it to yourself to honor that.
I want to thank Dana, again, for joining me on the podcast and helping all of us get comfortable with self-care and saying “no.” Also, big shout-out to Deb, on the Other Side.
